Riverhead Blue Masques score 13 Teeny Award nominations

The Riverhead High School Blue Masques have received 13 nominations for this year’s performances ahead of next month’s 21st annual East End Arts Teeny Awards.

The Blue Masques performed two musicals this past school year, “Little Shop of Horrors” in the fall and “The Prom” in the spring. Four students were nominated for leading roles, two students for a supporting role, one student for an outstanding performer award and three for choreography awards. Two students were nominated for “Outstanding Poster Design.”

Nominations were announced yesterday on 106.1 BLI and on the Teeny Awards’ social media accounts.

Acting categories are split up between supporting and leading roles this year. Previously, awards were divided by gender. Two winners will be chosen in the acting categories for plays. One winner will be chosen for each acting category for musicals, which are divided between two categories based on the type of musical: “comedy” and “drama or jukebox/revue.”

The Teeny Awards started in 2002 to celebrate “excellence in high school theater across the East End of Long Island” modeled after Broadway’s Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards. Twenty-two schools on the East End and Brookhaven participate in the ceremony. All the high school productions are attended by a volunteer group of anonymous judges who attend and decide the nominees and winners.

This year’s ceremony will take place at Longwood High School on June 11 at 3 p.m.. Tickets can be purchased through the East End Arts website.
