Riverhead Little League held its 2023 opening day ceremonies Friday evening at Stotzky Park, where the league honored its longtime president, Jeremy Savio, who is stepping down after 10 years at the helm.

The Town of Riverhead named Stotzky Park’s Field 5 for Savio by a resolution of the Town Board Tuesday. Savio is credited by league board members and coaches with building the strength of the organization and growing participation in the game. Savio has also served as a member of the town’s Recreation Advisory Committee, which was establish to assist in the planning and prioritizing of recreational needs and projects in Riverhead Town.

Team members and their coaches paraded to Field 5 and assembled on the edge of the outfield grass for Friday evening’s ceremonies. A color guard from Cub Scout Pack 242 in Riverhead led the players onto Field 5 and presented the colors. Council Member Ken Rothwell lead the players in reciting the Little League Pledge. Jerry Halpin was master of ceremonies for the event.

Council Member Tim Hubbard read aloud a Certificate of Recognition from Supervisor Yvette Aguiar honoring Savio for his dedication to Riverhead Little League. Though Savio is stepping back from his duties running Riverhead Little League, he’s not leaving Little League management. In fact, he’s taking on more responsibility. In January, Savio was elected president of Little League District 36, comprising the 15 leagues located in eastern Suffolk County.

This year’s season kick-off, originally scheduled for last Saturday , was delayed a week by inclement weather.
