A 29-year-old homeless man was arrested on a burglary charge by Riverhead Town Police today in connection with his alleged theft of cash from an East Main Street laundromat April 22, according to a police press release.
Police said the owner of Peconic Laundromat, 721 East Main Street, went to police headquarters to report the April 22 burglary. The incident was captures on surveillance video, and the owner was “familiar with the suspect from prior interactions with him at the laundromat,” police said.
The man entered the laundromat prior to closing and hid inside, according to the report. After the laundromat closed, the suspect exited from his hiding place, removed approximately $1,000 in cash and exited through the rear door, police said.
Police said the suspect was identified as Jose Rivera-Martinez, who police said is homeless in the Riverhead area. Rivera-Martinez was charged with Burglary in the Third Degree, processed and held for arraignment, police said.
